"A THRIVING INDUSTRIAL SECTOR"

ONAGAWA & THE OCEAN:
its location in a naturally favorable coastal area near abundant offshore fishing regions means that the major industry of Onagawa has always been fisheries. The town boasts some of the biggest catches of saury and salmon in the country, and is also a significant contributor to fields such as breeding and processed fish products. Recent issues facing this industry include smaller catches, cheaper imported products and the decline in skilled workers. To combat this, Onagawa is working hard to provide recruitment and training programs, and promote the farming of salmon, oysters and scallops, and restocking the ocean with salmon, trout and abalone. Other activities include the remodeling of the wholesale fish market to reflect modern hygiene requirements, and campaigns to promote marine products in other areas. All of these activities help in maintaining the levels of prosperity in Onagawa that its citizens are used to.

INTEGRATED FISHERIES, FORESTRY,
AGRICULTURE & COMMERCE:

agricultural concerns focus on forest conservation, and forging a close relationship with the industrial and commercial sectors. The town actively recruits new ventures from outside areas, particularly in relation to marine food products.

TOURISM:
a quarter of a million tourists visit Onagawas main tourist facility, Marine Pal Onagawa. Sporting events held at the municipal sports park attract approximately 240,000 visitors every year. Onagawa places great importance on tourism while working to preserve its natural beauty, not exploit it.
