Above all else Onagawa is a port town. Situated at the meeting point of two major ocean currents, the Kinkasan offshore region provides abundant catches for the boats that set out before dawn. They return to port and unload their wares amid the bustling voices of auctioneers and market-goers.
The fortunes of Onagawa are inextricably linked with the ocean, and the sea will always be its lifeblood. And now, aiming for a sustainable balance between us and our marine environment, cultivation of such species as salmon, scallops, abalone and oysters is being actively pursued: positive action to ensure a prosperous future.
